The big end of the year project in third grade are business days. The students can either start a business alone or with a partner/team. They had to come up with a business plan/idea, buy a license to sell (using classroom money they have earned) and manufacture the product.
Nathan's idea was to make "guys" using recycled gum wrappers. Ryan helped refine the process and Nathan ran with it. We came up with the name of his product and built a display to sell them. We called them Wrapper Tappers- "tap into your imagination". Who needs army guys when there is paper or tinfoil around- just make your own and let your imagination run wild.
In all, there were 4 days that they got to sell their wares to fellow students and the rest of the student body (and parents too). The third graders had to keep track of how much product they had, how much they sold, how much money they earned minus the amount of renting space and advertising. It was a real learning experience on so many levels. Most importantly, Nathan had fun making them, selling them and just being a part of a bigger project!!
